Protecting Yourself from Mortgage Fraud
The warning signs of mortgage fraud and identity theft, and how to steer clear of both.
Updated for 2026
Mortgage fraud happens when someone deliberately misrepresents information to get financing they wouldn't otherwise qualify for. It can land you in real legal and financial trouble — even if you were only trying to help someone out.
- Inflating your income or overstating your job status
- Misrepresenting the amount or source of your down payment
- Claiming a rental property as your primary residence
- Not disclosing existing mortgage or debt obligations
- Adding a co-borrower who won't live in the home or take responsibility for the mortgage
